It can be helpful to understand the distinction between counselling and psychotherapy. While definitions can vary, counselling is generally considered a brief intervention process that focuses on one or more problem areas in one's current life situation.
Psychotherapy is usually longer-term, and it relates your current problems to life-long and possibly multi-generational behaviour patterns and personality issues. I find that clients often begin with a straightforward issue, such as a conflict with
a boss, and in the process of solving the problem realize that they in fact have a pattern of similar conflicts in other areas of
their lives. With this new awareness, they may opt for a course of more in-depth psychotherapy, to understand and change these deeply rooted patterns.
